Garage Door Won't Open? Common Causes and Fixes
By EasyToFix Homes Team
A garage door that will not open can leave your car stuck inside at the worst possible moment. Many causes are quick fixes, but some parts, especially springs and cables, are under extreme tension and should only be handled by a trained technician.
1. Replace the remote or keypad batteries
If the wall button works but the remote does not, swap in fresh batteries. If that does not help, reprogram the remote using the learn button on the opener motor.
2. Check power to the opener
Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power. Check for a tripped breaker or a GFCI outlet that needs to be reset.
3. Clean and align the safety sensors
The two photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the tracks must face each other. If an indicator light is blinking or off, wipe the lenses and gently adjust the brackets until both lights glow steadily. Clear away anything blocking the beam.
4. Make sure the door is not locked
Many doors have a manual slide lock, and some openers have a vacation lock button on the wall control. Either one will stop the door from moving.
5. Reconnect the emergency release
If someone pulled the red emergency release cord, the trolley is disconnected from the opener. Pull the cord toward the door, then run the opener so the carriage reconnects.
6. Look for a broken torsion spring
A loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the spring above the door, or a door that feels extremely heavy usually means a spring has snapped. Do not try to lift the door or repair the spring yourself. Springs store enough energy to cause serious injury.
7. Inspect tracks and rollers
Bent tracks, loose brackets or worn rollers can cause the door to bind. Tighten loose hardware and lubricate rollers and hinges with a silicone or lithium spray. Badly bent tracks need professional repair.
8. Check the travel limits
If the door starts to open and then reverses, the opener travel or force limits may need adjusting. Follow your opener manual or have a technician recalibrate it.
When to call a garage door technician
Call a professional for broken springs or cables, a door that is off its tracks, opener motor failure, or commercial doors that must meet UL 325 safety requirements for entrapment protection.
