How to Unclog a Drain Without a Plumber

By EasyToFix Homes Team

A slow or fully clogged drain is one of the most common household problems, and in most cases you can fix it yourself with tools you already own. Start with the gentlest method and work your way up. If none of these work, the blockage is likely deeper in the line and needs professional equipment.

1. Pour boiling water down the drain

For kitchen sinks clogged with grease or soap buildup, slowly pour a kettle of boiling water directly into the drain in two or three stages, waiting a few seconds between each pour.

Avoid this method if you have PVC pipes joined with glue or a porcelain sink that could crack from sudden heat. Use very hot tap water instead.

2. Try baking soda and vinegar

Pour about half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a plug or wet cloth and let it fizz for 15 minutes, then flush with hot water.

This works best on light organic buildup. It will not dissolve a solid hair clog, but it often loosens enough material to restore flow.

3. Use a plunger the right way

Use a cup plunger for sinks and tubs. Fill the basin with enough water to cover the plunger cup, block the overflow opening with a wet rag, and pump firmly 15 to 20 times while keeping the seal tight.

4. Pull the clog out with a drain snake

A plastic barbed drain stick or a small hand auger is the most effective tool for bathroom sink and shower clogs, which are almost always hair. Feed it into the drain, twist, and pull the debris out.

5. Clean the P-trap under the sink

If the sink still drains slowly, the clog may be sitting in the curved P-trap below it.

  1. Place a bucket under the trap to catch water.
  2. Unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with channel-lock pliers.
  3. Remove the trap, clear out debris and rinse it.
  4. Reinstall it, hand-tighten the nuts, and run water to check for leaks.

6. Skip harsh chemical drain cleaners

Caustic drain cleaners can damage older pipes, harm septic systems and cause burns if they splash back. Enzyme-based cleaners are a safer choice for routine maintenance.

When to call a licensed plumber

Call a professional if multiple drains back up at the same time, water comes up in the tub when you flush the toilet, you notice a sewage smell, or the clog returns within days. These usually point to a main line or sewer problem that needs a camera inspection or hydro-jetting.
